About the Program
Through the Get Ready to Read program, your child will develop key early literacy skills while participating in self-paced, exploratory lessons. Your child will walk away from the program feeling empowered and inspired to learn to read!
Being a strong reader is a gateway to success in school and in life. Research shows that children who develop strong early literacy skills perform better in elementary school and beyond. The best way you can support your child is through engaging, hands-on activities that get your child to see the connection between literacy and their life. The Get Ready to Read program empowers kids to listen to sounds in words, pay attention to the letters they see around them, and develop reading comprehension skills with favorite stories. Kids will come out of the program ready for academic success and—even more importantly— academic enjoyment.
This program was designed to inspire kids to love learning, but it was also designed with you, my fellow parents, in mind. You’ll go from feeling overwhelmed by how to prepare your preschooler or kindergartener for learning how to read to knowing exactly how to support your child’s development. Even better, you won’t have to plan a thing! Your child will be engaged in self-directed lessons that are connected to their lives at home.
About Lily Jones
As a former kindergarten teacher with an M.A. in Education from U.C. Berkeley, I know learning to read begins long before kids try to sound out words. I also know how important it is that kids feel excited and empowered to learn, a mindset that will benefit them throughout their entire academic career (and beyond!) As a mom, I’ve found it hard to find ready-to-go, hands-on activities that kids can do independently. I created Curiosity School to get kids excited about learning through activities that give parents a well-deserved break.
Six Early Literacy Skills
By the end of the program, your child will have developed six early literacy skills that research shows are key for success in reading and writing:
‣ Phonological awareness: The ability to recognize and work with sounds in words
‣Concepts of print: The understanding of how print works.
‣Vocabulary: Learning new words and using them in context
‣Narrative Skills: The ability to understand and connect to stories
‣Letter recognition: Identifying the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make
‣Print motivation: A love of reading!
What the Program Includes
Through the Get Ready to Read program, kids will have access to 23 lessons that they can do in any order and as many times as they like. Each lesson contains:
